A Journey led by the Senses —DD-2, a story written in wood

Led by artist-researcher Sissel Tolaas, a variety of Dinesen Douglas smells captured in the brand’s first scent product

In collaboration with Norwegian artist and artist-researcher in smell, Sissel Tolaas, Dinesen sets foot on a new path —a path led by the senses and curiosity for wood. Originating from Dinesen‘s passion for the Douglas tree, this extraordinary collaboration is a celebration of the majestic tree and a journey towards understanding its perceptual qualities. But how do you record and collect the smell of a tree?

Together with Sissel Tolaas, Dinesen traveled from Schwarzwald in Germany to their main production site in Jens, Southern Denmark. Equipped with special recording gear, smells from the impressive Douglas trees were collected. Sissel Tolass‘ meticulous recordings were first registered as data and then converted to an archive of recorded molecules — an archive called DD-1, from where a variety of Dinesen Douglas smells can be explored. From the DD-1 archive, Sissel and Dinesen have isolated certain interesting molecules in order to create an essence of Dinesen Douglas through the sense of smell. DD-2 is the name of the Dinesen Douglas scent. It represents beautiful moments from the field trips —the freshness of a newly cut Douglas tree, the dryness from the sawmill and the calm feeling of walking barefoot on Dinesen Douglas planks.

The power of smell — DD-2, Studio Pneuma & Sissel Tolaas

DD-2 encapsulates the journey of the Dinesen Douglas tree. It is a seducing tale of the forest —unfolded by your senses. Precisely our senses have a great impact on our wellbeing in a physical space, and it is this special attention that is at the heart of this collaboration. Close your eyes and smell DD-2, the scent will make the Douglas tree reveal itself through your senses. These perceptual qualities are just some of the reasons why Dinesen is celebrating this extraordinary tree.
