Make It Last. It’s Time for a Design Strategy that Moves Atlanta Further Ahead
Pivot the focus from throwaway trends and broken ideas to — longevity, circularity, impact, elevation, and meaningful engagement that instills focus, action, and pride —in other words, whatever you do, do it to ‘Make It Last’ — the 2026 theme of the Atlanta Design Festival.
Celebrating its 17th edition, the evolution of the Atlanta Design Festival (ADF) is a milestone we can all be proud of. Many from around the world have contributed to this success, whether as designers, global brand ambassadors, volunteers, friends, colleagues, policymakers or visitors. Together, we’ve helped shape the ADF trajectory and forge Atlanta design into what it is today — but the work is far from done.

Listed in Dezeen’s top 50 design events in the world is a great accomplishment, yet ADF mission remains unwavering — to provoke the creative industries, nurture the Atlanta design ecosystem and economy, and celebrate the virtues of contemporary culture. The 2026 ADF theme MAKE IT LAST is a thought-provoking message of timelessness and leaving a legacy that can only manifest through allegiance and determination, the sparks that ignites prosperity and makes Atlanta the undisputed creative envy of the Southeast.
According to Bernard McCoy, ADF founding partner and Editor-in-Chief of Design is Human, “The 2026 theme is appropriate because it explores how thoughtful acts and coming together creates powerful outcomes that drive lasting change. It’s about re-defining modernity in Atlanta long after the festival has ended. For me, MAKE IT LAST resonates as a reflection point of what ADF has accomplished over the years and my drive to push the ADF experience harder and further than ever imagined. ADF is an open platform and agent of change, and through it’s idea-crazed programming as a gateway to the creative industries, Atlanta Design Festival is your designation to experience what MAKE IT LAST means to each of us.”
MAKE IT LAST champions longevity, circularity, and adaptive reuse. Instead of the traditional “demolish and rebuild” model, these ideas focus on best practices, design and materials that endure, evolve, and give back to their environment and society over centuries. It fuels the festival’s programming, fosters radical thinking on the built environment and expands Atlanta’s global identity. It challenges tradition and legacy constraints of the past that stifles creativity and advancement. When effective, design is a powerful force in the Atlanta economy, but its potential is still to this day not understood by many and remains largely untapped. Make it Last long game. Each year Milan Design Week welcomes over half a million visitors. Bernard McCoy, Editor in Chief — Design Is Human Founding Partner, Atlanta Design Festival
